Baking Soda In The Laundry To Get Rid of Sweaty Smells

The other day I wrote a post and briefly mentioned using baking soda in the laundry to eliminate odors.  Well today I want to talk about that further.

I have three sons and the oldest 2 are aged 14 and 12, so they are right at that sweaty, smelly boy stage.  We live in a warm climate so they often come home from school stinking of sweat.

Their school uniforms, more so than normal T-shirts, tend to really smell when they get sweaty and I was finding it really difficult to wash out the smell.  Regardless of the washing powder I used or whether I washed in hot or cold water, I could always still smell that sweaty smell on their school shirts after they had been washed.

So I thought I’d give the baking soda a go.  I put the washing powder into the machine as normal and then I just sprinkled a spoonful of baking soda over the clothes.  Turned on the washing machine and when they were done I couldn’t believe that the boys shirts did not smell!

The baking soda in the washing machine really does work to remove smells from clothes that normal washing just doesn’t remove.  My kids now go to school smelling great and if they come home smelling a bit sweaty, that’s ok because I just wash their shirts again with a spoonful of baking soda!

Cleaning with Baking Soda

Let’s take a look at a few uses of baking soda for cleaning:

  • For general cleaning dissolve 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 litre of water.  Wet a cleaning cloth and away you go, this is great for cleaning kitchen and bathroom benches.
  • In the laundry add some baking soda to your wash to leave your clothes smelling fresh as baking soda absorbs smells.  Add 1/4 cup for front loaders and 1/2 cup for top loaders.
  • Baking soda is also great for cleaning baking dishes, glass and ceramic.  Just make a paste with baking soda and a small amount of water and use that paste to clean.  You can also use this paste to remove soap scum in the bathroom.
  • Add some baking soda to coffee cups and add water and let the solution sit and soak for a while, this will remove stains from your coffee cups.

Cleaning With Vinegar

Vinegar is a natural discinfectant so it is a popular choice for a natural cleaning product.  Vinegar is very effective for killing bacteria, mold and other germs.

Let’s take a look at some of the jobs around the house that you can use vinegar for.

  1. Clean bench tops.  Dilute vinegar in some water and soak a cloth in it.  Don’t dilute the vinegar too much as you don’t want to lose its cleaning abilities.  Wash your bench tops with the soaked cloth and they will be left clean, smelling nice and without any bacteria. Continue reading

Clean Your Oven With Baking Soda

If you read my last post you would know that we had a mouse problem with a dead mouse behind our oven.  We noticed the smell coming from a cupboard next to the oven and after emptying the cupboard found that it must be coming from a small crack that led to the back of the oven.  Placing baking soda in the cupboard absorbed the smell which was fantastic, but it didn’t get rid of the dead mouse.

I was making pizza for dinner and when I lifted the fan flap of the oven I was almost knocked over by the smell.  The dead mouse is definitely behind that oven.  Thank fully my husband is a plumber and he disconnected the gas and took the oven out – no dead mouse.  So then he unscrewed and removed the outer cover of the oven and there it was, inside the oven frame.

So we found and removed the dead mouse, but of course the smell lingered behind.  Not to mention the fact that there is no way on earth that I’m going to cook in that oven with that smell, so the oven needs one big clean!

How to Clean a Drain With Baking Soda and Vinegar

Among the many uses for baking soda and vinegar is the ability to use it to clean and unclog drains.  Using baking soda to clean your drains has the benefit of being more environmentally friendly and it eliminates the use of harsh chemicals that leave nasty odors and residue in your sink.

Let’s take a look at two different options for cleaning drains with baking soda and vinegar.

Option 1

With this option pour one cup of baking soda into the drain and then pour in one cup of hot vinegar.  You can heat the vinegar in the microwave.  Leave the mixture in the drain for five minutes and then flush the drain with hot water.  If you haven’t cleaned your drain for a long time and there is a lot of build-up then you may need to repeat the flush a couple of times to get the best results.
